Underwriters Laboratories has released a “Standard for Determination of Sharpness of Edges of Electrical Equipment,” U.L. 1439. The UL 1439 standard calls for the use of the Sharp Edge Tester in order to provide an objective and uniform test method for determining compliance with an existing safety requirement.

Most U.L. standards covering consumer products contain a subjective requirement such as “an edge, projection, or corner of an enclosure, opening, frame, guard, knob, handle, or the like, shall be smooth, well rounded, and not sufficiently sharp to constitute a hazard.”

Technical Engineering Service Corporation engineered and manufactured the original
Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™

Will Your Product Cause Serious Injury?

Technical Engineering Service Corporation’s Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ is the leader in product safety testing equipment for edge sharpness. If you have a new product that you plan to submit to Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for approval, you must use this tool to test the edges. Your product will not be approved by UL without doing so.

The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™, partnered with our Tape Cape Kit Model TC-3™, (specifically made to be used with the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™), is extremely easy to use. When testing with the force the tool applies, a dangerously sharp edge will cut through the two outer layers of the sensing tape on the Tape Cap exposing the black layer of tape. This means that your product does not meet UL’s sharp edge testing safety standards. If you do not cut through to the first layer of beige Teflon tape, then your edge meets the UL Standard 1439 (see center column) and is acceptable for consumer use.

The UL Standard

Our Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ meets the international standards set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Technical Engineering Service Corporation created and built the first production model of the SET-50 Sharp Edge Tester and is the original manufacturer of the SET-50 Sharp Edge Tester which meets the requirements of UL to test according to the UL 1439 "Standard for Determination of Sharpness of Edges".

This standard calls for the use of the Sharp Edge Tester to provide an objective and uniform test method for determining compliance with existing safety requirements.

The Sharp Edge Tester

Made in the USA. There are many companies worldwide — including several in China — that are duplicating the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™. Please take note that they are using inferior materials and do not provide the correct internal spring which can fatigue and break.

Therefore, it renders the tool useless as it is ineffective in determining proper edge sharpness.

Additionally, since our tool is manufactured in the USA, the instructions are in English, and we provide easily accessible customer service online or via phone.
